We currently have 840 children attending our school. We are a multi-cultural school that draws from a diverse community. The main ethnic representations are: NZ European, NZ Maori, Pasifika, Indian, Chinese and other ethnicities. We have a very supportive community who enjoy welcoming International Students into their homes.
Currently we welcome students from China and Korea and look forward to welcoming students from all over the world. English language learning courses are specifically tailored to the requirements of students, whether enrolled at our school for a short time (2-3 weeks) or for longer periods (1 term - 1 year), with a strong focus on developing written and oral language whilst ensuring their understanding.
English Language Learning
Our programme builds on the knowledge that students already have from their own school experience by focusing on building oral language skills in both curriculum and social contexts, and
building vocabulary and grammar and written English skills. It also sharpens their receptive and productive English language skills.
Arahoe School has a friendly, supportive and welcoming community that enjoys hosting International Students. The families look forward to sharing the New Zealand culture and enjoy learning about other cultures. Our host families embrace International Students, ensuring they are safe, comfortable and well cared for during the length of their stay. Host families are organised by the Director of International Students. To ensure the students have a successful placement, all host families are police vetted and visited prior to the students’ stay. On-going monitoring of the students’ well-being during the length of their stay ensures students will have a safe and comfortable experience. Our International Students report that during their time with their homestay families they become part of a ‘Kiwi’ family, have new experiences, improve their English and make life-long friends.
Arahoe School works hard on providing a system which ensures all International Students have two New Zealand buddies. This helps them to assimilate to a new environment and learn English quickly. The New Zealand buddies are carefully selected and are kind and culturally compassionate students. Buddies receive training on how to have conversations with our International Students. This provides the students with an opportunity to build life-long friendships.
Pastoral Care of International Students is a priority. Pastoral care ensures the students are making progress and that their experience is successful. The Director of International Students meets regularly with the students to ensure they are both happy at school and in their homestay environments. International Students and their homestay families are supplied with 24/7 emergency contacts.
